# Is there a way to retrieve data from .tmp file?

## Question:

If the software crashes and generates a temporary file, is there a way to recover lost work?

## Applies to:

## Answer:

So long as the **filename.ntop.tmp** is larger than 0kb, you can open the file by changing the name to just **filename.ntop.** Generally, a 0 kb file means the data is corrupt and unusable. We suggest [enabling auto backup](/help-articles/knowledge-base/interop/an-unexpected-error-occurs-upon-opening-files).
